UCT Libraries are calling for more volunteers to help salvage archival materials within the Jagger Reading Room, which was destroyed by the fire on Sunday, 18 April.

Since late last week, volunteers have helped to recover 50% of the archival materials.

Shifts are available from 08:00 to 13:00 and 13:00 to 18:00 from today until Sunday, 9 May.

UCT says it is important to register in advance, as limited spaces are available for each shift and you will need to show a confirmation email to security upon arrival.

Volunteers are asked to bring:

  • a pen;
  • gloves if you have them;
  • head lamps if you have them;
  • sunblock as you might be exposed to sun for long periods of time during the shift;
  • if there was rain before your shift, bringing old towels and rags to assist with drying crates would be most helpful.
