From now until 29 April, will be the last time you can visit the Monkey Town Primate Centre. The attraction will be closing its doors.
For more than 23 years, the centre has welcomed visitors of all ages, who come to admire the over 600 animal species there. It was home to a large variety of monkeys and apes, but also housed several other animals like birds and alpacas.
However, in light of the ongoing developments that are coming up in the vicinity, a statement by the Monkey Town management team read that it needed to close.
“When Monkey Town opened its doors in the year 2000 we were in a rural part of Somerset West and surrounded by nature and a quiet environment, which was great for our animals. This has changed dramatically as the years have gone by and the ever increasing noise pollution has become problematic for our animals.”
The statement, by the owner and managers, further noted that it did not have the finances to relocate the establishment.
“We would like to thank the public for their kindness and support over the past 23 years and wish you all the best for the future.”
What happens to the animals?
According to the statement, the animals will be moved to suitable homes, that have been approved by Nature Conservation.
But before then, visitors still have the opportunity to see, learn and engage with the animals at the centre. Other activities, such as pools and water slides are also available there.
