While Sea Point detectives investigate the circumstances of his death, it is suspected that the man took his own life.
Ward councillor Nicola Jowell confirmed the incident and expressed her condolences.
“SAPS and Law Enforcement [were] on the promenade at the scene where a person has sadly taken their own life. My thoughts are with the family of the deceased,” she said.
Jowell reported on the incident on social media shortly after the discovery was made, at which time she had few details about who the man was.
She described the incident as deeply distressing and emphasised the importance of mental health support.
“It is incredibly tragic for anyone to be in that situation, that they feel that this is their only option. I would encourage anyone to reach out to SADAG… if they feel that they do need help or do not know where to turn,” she added.
Jowell extended her condolences to the man’s family and friends.
Meanwhile, Western Cape police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk has urged anyone who may have information on the incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or to make contact via the MySAPS mobile application.
