The Western Cape Department of Transport says no new taxi operators’ licences will be issued to CATA and CODETA taxi operators until the suspension of the special regulatory process has been lifted.
The Department says it has engaged with the City of Cape Town to suspend the regulatory process in response to last week’s violent and disruptive taxi protests here in the Mother City.
Spokesperson, Jandre Bakker says only when authorities are satisfied that the violence had come to an end, would the lifting of the suspension be considered.
Bakker says Transport MEC Daylin Mitchell is studying the report he received from officials after the strike.
He says, should the violence continue, the suspension of the regulatory process will stay in place.
He says it has also been decided to place CATA and CODETA taxi operators under red status for the time being.
Bakker says some operators may also have their operating licences suspended.
