Life expectancy improves, increase in people with HIV

Published on

Life expectancy in the country has slightly improved compared to last year when it declined for the first time in almost 2 decades due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year, the Total Life Expectancy at birth had dropped by 3.5 years, with males declining to below 60. However, that has now improved.
Meanwhile: The latest population statistics show that 8.45 million people are living with HIV in the country. Statistics South Africa released the 2022 mid-year population figures yesterday. It shows there are now 60.6 million people in the country, just over a 1% annual increase. Stats SA’s Diego Irrutalde says South Africa has a very young population.
