Law enforcement deployments have been boosted on the N2, R300 and Jakes Gerwel Drive, following a series of recent attacks.

According to reports, there were several smash-and-grab attacks on Jakes Gerwel Drive near Langa on Tuesday morning. Police are yet to confirm the details.

The City of Cape Town states that it is working on an operational plan for Jakes Gerwel, confirming that additional enforcement personnel have been deployed along the route.

Enforcement on the N2 has also recently been bolstered by an additional 40-strong highway team, as stone-throwing incidents continue to plague the N2 and parts of the R300.

The Freedom Front Plus yesterday said these highways have become “war zones” for motorists, listing recent incidents that have been reported to them.

The party’s Emre Uygun, who is also a City of Cape Town councillor, says some of the latest victims include a family from Johannesburg, among them a baby, who was targeted on 11 November when a stone struck their vehicle.

Uygun says he also spoke to a doctor from Somerset West after he was attacked on 13 November at 19:00 near the Borcherds Quarry off-ramp. He sustained chest injuries and was admitted to the hospital.

He says drastic measures must be implemented to prevent further injuries or deaths on the notorious “Hell Run”, which stretches from Somerset West to the Cape Town International Airport and includes the R300 junction.

Uygun cited law enforcement statistics, claiming that between November 2024 and November 2025, law enforcement responded to 2,215 crime-related incidents on the N2 and R300 corridors.

But the MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says this is misleading and distorted, as the figure of 2,215 relates to all incidents reported, of which nearly 85% were breakdowns, mechanical failures, motorists running out of fuel, or flat tyres.

Smith says while the N2 remains a challenge, the City is “deeply committed and has invested substantial resources to improve safety on the highway for our residents.”

He says he agrees with Councillor Uygun that better fencing and additional interventions are needed, which is something he will keep fighting for.
