LADUMA: Grannies bend it like Beckham in football tournament

Published on

In April, women over the age of 50 gathered from across the globe to take part in the South Africa Grannies International Football Tournament (GIFT) in Limpopo.

Hosted by the Beka Ntsanwisi Foundation and the Vakhegula Vakhegula Football Club, the event brought together 22 teams from countries such as the USA, Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia, Togo, and South Africa, all united by their passion for football and active aging.

The tournament, which took place from 2-5 April, featured a series of 11-a-side matches, with teams competing in a friendly yet competitive environment. The matches consisted of 20- to 30-minute halves, with the final match played on April 5.

The American team, the New England Breakers, emerged victorious, defending their 2023 title in a penalty shootout against the French team, Les Z’amies Foot, after a 0-0 draw.

The tournament, which is open to players of all skill levels, provided a platform to promote fitness and social activity among older women. It also allowed participants to experience the local culture of Limpopo.

The GIFT tournament, which first gained international attention in 2010, has grown over the years, with 240 teams now participating across South Africa and beyond.

“We are delighted to host the Grannies’ International Soccer Tournament in our province. This event promotes active aging, encourages physical fitness and fosters social cohesion and nation-building,” said Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba.

The next tournament, in 2027, will be hosted in Kenya.
