Jacob Zuma to be imprisoned for contempt of court

The Constitutional Court has found former President Jacob Zuma guilty of contempt of court.

He had repeatedly refused to appear before the Zondo commission, launching attacks on the judiciary instead.

Zuma has been sentenced to a direct prison sentence of a period of 15 months. In a strongly worded judgement, the Constitutional Court says this sentence cannot begin to capture the damage Zuma has done to the judiciary.

Justice Sisi Khampepe notes that the majority judgment is unappealable. This means Zuma has to go to jail. Zuma has 5 days to submit himself to either the Nkandla or Johannesburg police stations.

If he fails to do so, the Minister of Police or National Commissioner must take steps, within 3 days, to deliver him to a correctional facility.
