What is the most iconic collab in music history?

Published on

Even the greatest of artists need different voices, ideas and sounds to spice up their music. These are some of the biggest – and maybe the best – collaborations over the last few years.

This weekend we’re celebrating the Top 200 Collabs on Smile FM.

When You Believe by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey

Two of the greatest vocalists in modern history collabed on this track – and it is pure gold! Bet you can’t keep your tears back once the choir’s part kicks in.

My Boo by Alicia Keys and Usher

This duet was so good, that people believed the two were dating. But we can just thank the good musical chemistry between the R&B singers, because there was no evidence of a romantic relationship. This collab features on the special edition of Usher’s 2004 album: Confessions – and see Alicia Keys deliver a rap verse!

Airplanes by B.o.B and Hayley Williams

There is something so attractive about meshing rap and rock together. This collab features Hayley Williams, the lead vocalist of Paramore and American rapper B.o.B. I cannot remember a time when every moody teen ‘felt’ this song in their core. Beautiful times!

Love Yourself by Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran

Two of the biggest male artists in the industry, merged to bring this mega hit to life. Be warned, listening back to this collab will give you a serious case of ear worm. This hit forms part of the Purpose: The Movement series that featured songs from Bieber’s album, Purpose. Remember those colour-clad girls dancing in Sorry?

I Need You Love by Ellie Goulding and Calvin Harris

During the years when EDM and big room house boomed in popularity: Calvin Harris collaborated with pop princess, Ellie Goulding to give us this chart topper. The song reached no.4 in the UK Singles Chart making Harris the first artist to have 9 Top Ten songs from the same album!

Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars

The 2015 hit spent seven whole weeks at the No.1 spot – seemingly unstoppable – and became the biggest selling single of the year. ‘Hot damn!’ The song was written during a freestyle studio session. Copyright discrepancies rose after the song’s release, resulting in several lawsuits and changes to its songwriting credits.

The Boy Is Mine by Brandy and Monica

First, can we all agree that the bad boy in this dramatic love triangle need to stop playing with these two women!? This song is both Brandy and Monica’s first No.1 Billboard hit. It went on to win the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. This song would become the all-time No.1 female duet in US chart history!

Bang Bang by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj

Pop powerhouses collab to give us this loud and proud pop-soul hit. Bang Bang went on to receive a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 57th Grammy Awards back in 2015. It won the Favourite Song of the Year award at the 2015 Kids’ Choice Awards.
