ICYMI: Absa Run Your City route change & road closures

route

The Absa Run Your City Cape Town 10k, taking place this Sunday, 10 May, is making amendments to its route, which will see the race finish on the Grand Parade for the first time in its 11-year history.

The new finish location means that the route will have to be reconfigured to accommodate the end stage and account for 10km in the reroute.

The first half of the race will remain the same, with the athletes setting off from Woodbridge Island in Milnerton, making their way through Paarden Island and then into the city centre via the N1 and FW De Klerk Boulevard.

Once in the city, the route will divert at the Coen Steytler Roundabout into Lower Long Street via Walter Sisulu Avenue.

The runners will head up 1,2km on Long Street, turn into Wale Street, down Adderley Street, before making a final turn onto Darling Street for a finish in front of the ‘Grand Old Dame’.

The race will set off from Woodbridge Island at 09:00.

Grassy Park mother charged with murder, after baby found dead

A Grassy Park woman initially charged for the abandonment of a newborn baby is now facing a murder charge.

31-year-old Ireesha Francis appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

She is said to have returned home without the baby on Saturday, after giving birth the day before.

A search ensued for the baby girl, and the newborn was found deceased, wrapped in blankets and plastic, in a drain in Lotus River on Sunday. It’s believed the woman told police where to find the body.

Francis had already been in police custody on Saturday for child abandonment.

WC response teams on high alert for adverse weather

The Western Cape (WC) Government has confirmed that its disaster management and response teams have been placed on high alert as an intense cut-off low-pressure system is expected to impact parts of the province.

These conditions are expected, particularly in the Garden Route, with heavy rain also expected in the Overberg and surrounding inland areas.

Earlier this week, the South African Weather Service warned of heavy rainfall, strong winds, rough seas, and disruptive snowfall over high-lying areas, which are expected from Tuesday evening into Wednesday, with the potential for significant flooding, damage to infrastructure and disruptions to essential services.

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre is reportedly coordinating response efforts with district and local municipalities, national departments, and emergency services. Joint Operations Centres have been activated across high-risk areas, and water rescue resources are being pre-positioned.

“While many dams in the affected catchment areas currently show low to moderate levels, authorities caution that intense rainfall over short periods could result in rapid inflows, dam spillages and downstream flooding.”

As a precautionary measure, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has also advised that school closures have been put in place for Wednesday and Thursday in selected circuits in the Eden and Central Karoo Education District.

This includes circuits in George, Knysna, Oudtshoorn and surrounding areas. Learner transport routes in affected circuits have also been suspended.

Residents are urged to:

  • Avoid crossing flooded roads, rivers and low-lying bridges
  • Stay away from coastal areas during periods of high seas and strong winds
  • Monitor official communication channels for updates
  • Assist vulnerable community members where possible

Emergency and relief services, including health, humanitarian organisations, law enforcement and sea rescue teams, remain on standby.

WCED Closes Schools in Eden and Central Karoo Ahead of Severe Weather

school closure

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has confirmed that several schools in the Eden and Central Karoo Education District will be closed on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, and Thursday, 7 May 2026, as a cold front is expected to make landfall later today, bringing severe rainfall to the region.

The department said the decision to close schools was taken after extensive consultation with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre and the South African Weather Service (SAWS), which has issued severe rainfall warnings for affected areas.

Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier said the closure was made in the interest of safety for both learners and educators.

“In the interests of learner and teacher safety, and after extensive consultation with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre and the South African Weather Service, a decision has been taken to close schools in certain areas,” Maynier said.

The department confirmed that all public ordinary and special needs schools in specific circuits will remain closed on both days due to the weather warning.

Affected areas

The following school circuits will be closed:

  • Circuits 3 and 8 (George)
  • Circuit 4 (Knysna)
  • Circuits 5 and 6 (Oudtshoorn)

Maynier added that schools have already been informed and instructed to notify parents and caregivers as soon as possible so that families can make appropriate arrangements ahead of the weather impact.

“All schools are expected to open on Friday, 8 May 2026. We will, however, evaluate the weather prediction for the end of the week to determine whether any individual school closures are necessary for the remainder of the week,” Maynier stressed.

The department further clarified that all other schools across the province will remain open unless otherwise communicated.
