7 fatal drownings in 3 weeks: NSRI urges beachgoers to be safe

With seven fatal drowning incidents recorded in the past three weeks, the National Sea Rescue Institute is urging beachgoers to heed holiday water safety tips.

As with every festive season, the NSRI anticipates an influx of visitors to local beaches soon, especially with the summer school holiday having started this week.

As such, the Institute is stressing the importance of responsible behaviour in and around water, noting a marked rise in emergency responses at beaches, rivers, dams and swimming pools in late November to early December.

Andrew Ingram, the NSRI Communications Manager, emphasised the lifesaving role of community involvement.

“Public vigilance, lifeguard services, and community collaboration continue to save lives every day.”

According to the NSRI, its volunteers have responded to 13 drownings in progress in the past three weeks, seven of which were fatal. Ingram said that over the same period, a combined effort by NSRI volunteers, lifeguards and members of the public saved 25 lives, while five individuals were rescued using Pink Rescue Buoys.

“Pink Rescue Buoys have now been used in 230 rescues that we know of, with the most recent rescue where a Pink Buoy was used being for a father and his daughter at Brenton-On-Sea near Knysna. The impact of Public Rescue Equipment and emergency flotation cannot be overstated,” said Ingram.

The NSRI is urging all beachgoers to take precautions this holiday season by following its top safety guidelines, including avoiding alcohol when swimming or boating, supervising children closely, swimming where lifeguards are on duty, saving emergency numbers (like 112), and exercising caution during heavy rains and flooding.

“This holiday season, the NSRI encourages everyone, families, and communities to help prevent tragedies by staying informed and prepared,” said Ingram.

The City of Cape Town, together with the Western Cape Economic Development Partnership (EDP), says applications for the 2025/26 Water Grants are now open.

Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, says projects must run from February to June, with applications due by next Friday, 19 December 2025.

“The first round of grants demonstrated the power of active citizenry. We are excited to expand this work and encourage more organisations to step forward with solutions rooted in local knowledge.”

Nishendra Moodley, CEO of the Western Cape EDP says funding ranging from R10 000 to R250 000 will support community-led projects that prevent water pollution, improve sewer networks, and encourage citizen participation.

“We’ve seen how local organisations bring energy, insight, and trust into this work. This next round of grants will enable more community-level initiatives that not only address immediate challenges but also build long-term capability within communities.”

Applicants must submit realistic budgets and be completed by 30 June 2026. Application documents, including guidelines and a project plan template, are available at: https://wcedp.co.za/coct-water-grants/.

Completed applications must be submitted as instructed on the EDP website.

CAPEXIT calls for more policing actions along Jakes Gerwel drive and highways

calls for policing actions along jakes gerwel and popular highways

The Cape Independence Party (CAPEXIT) has called on local, provincial and national government, demanding urgent intervention to stop the violence on the N2, R300, Jakes Gerwel Drive, and surrounding routes leading to Cape Town International Airport.

This request follows the recent murder of 64-year-old Karin Van Aardt along the Jakes Gerwel Drive on Friday. Van Aardt, who was from Bloemfontein and travelling to Vredenburg, was fatally stabbed after robbers approached the car she and her husband were travelling in.

CAPEXIT says it has issued formal letters to the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, the Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, the National Minister of Police, and President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“The recent brutal murder of grandmother Karin van Aardt has shocked the nation — yet her death is only the latest in a growing pattern of violent attacks that have left Capetonians and visitors fearing for their lives.” the party added in a statement

CAPEXIT has called for an immediate, coordinated security response, including:

  • Saturation policing on all known hotspots.
  • Real-time coordination between the City’s Freeway Management System and on-the-ground operational units.
  • Permanent joint operations by SAPS, Metro Police, and specialised anti-robbery units.
  • Deployment of the SANDF over the festive season to stabilise these routes and deter organised criminal gangs.
  • Accountability from SAPS leadership, particularly the Provincial Commissioner.
  • Direct national intervention, requiring the Minister and National Commissioner of Police to exercise their constitutional authority to reinforce policing, deploy specialised units, and take operational responsibility for securing these national transport routes, given that SAPS is a national competency.

In addition to its government engagements, CAPEXIT says it has formally contacted Google Maps, requesting an urgent amendment to the platform’s routing algorithms to prevent the recommendation of Jakes Gerwel Drive.

“Cape Town residents have had enough. Tourists landing in our world-class city should not step into a warzone. The death of Karin van Aardt must be a turning point,” CAPEXIT Party Leader, Cllr Jack Miller

CAPEXIT and urged the public to remain vigilant, report all incidents, and support strong, immediate interventions to prevent further loss of life. The Party will continue pressing every sphere of government until Cape Town’s roads are safe again.
