South Africa ranked world’s most generous nation in new global study

generous

South Africa has been named the world’s most generous nation in a new global study conducted by Remitly, a digital financial services provider.

The study, which assessed more than 4 500 people across 25 countries, measured generosity not through money or material giving, but through broader human behaviour, including empathy, emotional support, patience, kindness and a willingness to put others first.

Using the Interpersonal Generosity Scale, a research-validated psychological tool developed by Christian Smith and Jonathan P. Hill, participants were asked how strongly they identified with statements linked to supportive and prosocial behaviour.

Higher scores indicated populations that consistently display kindness, empathy and helpfulness.

South Africa leads the world

With an average score of 51.57 out of a possible 60, South Africa topped the global list.

According to the study, South Africans strongly identified with statements highlighting the value of others’ happiness and the importance of community-centred behaviour.

The Philippines ranked second with a score of 50.2, reflecting the deeply rooted Filipino concept of pakikipagkapwa, which emphasises empathy, shared identity and communal responsibility.

The United States placed third at 49.23, with generosity often expressed through volunteering, fundraising and community initiatives.

Ireland and Canada completed the top five, followed by Portugal, Greece and the United Kingdom. Australia and Mexico rounded off the top 10 most generous countries.

Global rankings at a glance

Top 10 most generous nations:

  • South Africa – 51.57
  • Philippines – 50.2
  • United States – 49.23
  • Ireland – 48.4
  • Canada – 48.03
  • Portugal – 47.75
  • Greece – 47.62
  • United Kingdom – 47.53
  • Australia – 47.43
  • Mexico – 47.29

Ryan Riley, Remitly’s Vice President of Marketing for EMEA and APAC, said the research showed that generosity extends far beyond financial giving.

“Generosity is often seen purely through a financial lens, but our study shows it’s much more than that. The countries that rank highest aren’t just those who give the most money, but those where people consistently show up for others with kindness, empathy and everyday acts of support.”

He added that Remitly sees this spirit in action daily among customers who work abroad to support loved ones back home.

“It’s reflected in the culture of countries like South Africa and the Philippines, where caring for your community is a shared value rather than an individual choice.

“If you’re planning on making the move to a new country, immersing yourself in the local community and showing your generous side could be a great way to get involved and forge new and meaningful relationships,” he said.

UPDATE: Imizamo Yethu fire leaves scores homeless

fire

Disaster Risk Management officials are conducting an assessment to determine the extent of damage following a fire that occurred overnight in Imizamo Yethu. The fire was reported at around midnight on Christmas night.

No fatalities were reported, and the fire gutted approximately fifty structures, leaving around 80 residents of the Petersen Section of IY homeless.

The City’s assessment will aim to confirm the exact number of structures and persons affected for onward submission to SASSA and the Department of Social Development.

Other City Departments have also been activated to check whether there has been any damage to City infrastructure, clear fire debris and coordinate efforts to help the affected residents rebuild their structures.

Humanitarian relief partners, including Gift of the Givers, are on scene to deliver immediate assistance to those in need.

Ward Councillor Rob Quintas has thanked the various fire services and City law enforcement agencies who were present to rapidly extinguish the blaze and maintain order.

This, he says, ensured that the fire was addressed before it could reach a magnitude similar to previous incidents.

“My thoughts and prayers are with those who have experienced trauma and loss over this tragic event on Christmas night, and I thank the many service men and women who will now step in to restore, repair and assist.”

The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined, and more details will be provided as they are received.

Quintas has encouraged all residents to be cautious and vigilant when using fire in residential or public environments.

“This season is unfortunately synonymous with fire incidents in homes and nature settings and the first step to fire prevention begins with awareness and personal safety responsibility.”

Meanwhile, Gift of the Givers teams have also been activated at the Mbekweni Informal Settlement in Paarl, where a second fire in less than a week erupted.

In addition, Gift of the Givers teams also responded to a fire in Vygieskraal, Manenberg, where backyard dwelling structures were alight.

*This article was updated to reflect that 80 people have been affected in the Imizamo Yethu fire, as per City assessments.

Triple murder in Nyanga on Christmas night

The South African Police Service in the Western Cape has condemned a deadly shooting that claimed the lives of three people and left another critically injured in Nyanga on Christmas night.

The incident occurred at approximately 10 pm on 25 December at a residence on Mplangeni Street, near the Ofcon Hostel. Police say two unknown suspects allegedly entered a single-room structure and opened fire on the occupants.

Three people, estimated to be between the ages of 25 and 40, were fatally wounded during the attack. A fourth victim sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where they remain in a critical condition.

According to preliminary investigations, the shooting may be linked to revenge or an attempt to eliminate a witness. Police have stressed that this motive is still being investigated and has not yet been confirmed.

No arrests have been made at this stage.

The case is being investigated by detectives from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, who are following up on all available leads in an effort to track down the suspects. SAPS has also increased police visibility in the area following the shooting.

Western Cape police have condemned the attack in the strongest terms, describing it as a senseless act of violence, and reiterated their commitment to bringing those responsible to justice.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit tips via the MySAPS mobile application. Police have assured the public that all information will be treated with strict confidentiality.

Teen missing, another rescued, after being caught in Fish Hoek rip currents

An 18-year-old from Montana in Cape Town remains missing after disappearing in the surf at Fish Hoek beach on Wednesday, 24 December.

The NSRI says lifeguards commenced a rescue operation in front of the Fish Hoek Surf Lifesaving Club for 2 teenagers caught in rip currents on Wednesday morning.

Various rescue agencies responded to the scene. City of Cape Town lifeguards rescued an 18-year-old male (from Belhar, Cape Town) from the water while the search continues for the missing 18-year-old male from Montana.

The rescued teenager was transported to the hospital by CMR ambulance in a serious but stable condition.

Rescue resources, rescue craft and the Skymed rescue helicopter, arriving on the scene, joined CoCT lifeguards in ongoing search efforts for the missing teenager – including 5 rescue craft – 2 NSRI rescue craft, 2 lifeguard rescue craft and a Law Enforcement marine unit rescue craft, and the Skymed rescue helicopter.

Despite extensive air, sea and shoreline search efforts, there remain no signs of the missing 18-year-old male.

Police WPDS responded, and Police divers, assisted by a Police Air Wing helicopter, have taken over in ongoing search efforts for the missing teenager.

It appears that there were a group of teenagers at the beach with a carer when the 2 teenagers went into the water and were caught in rip currents.

Welcome home, Siya Kolisi!

kolisi

Cape Town and Stormers Rugby will welcome back two-time World Cup-winning Springbok captain Siya Kolisi at the conclusion of the season.

Kolisi will make his return in July 2026 and fulfill an important role mentoring the next generation as the club continues to build the squad’s depth and maturity as part of Project 2029.

The move will allow Kolisi to be closer to his family and also make a meaningful contribution to the team where it all started for him after leaving school.

The experienced Kolisi will not be the first or the last player to return to Cape Town and add significant value both on and off the pitch, as the club continues to strengthen its resources.

The iconic leader’s professional rugby journey started in Cape Town after he left school and he is now poised to add to his 118 DHL Stormers caps.

Having made his debut in 2012, Kolisi was appointed captain in 2017 before taking up the same position for the national team the following year. He went on to lift the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and would do so again in 2023.

The Springbok captain has a strong desire to return to where his professional rugby career started and be closer to his family and he is set to add immense value to the DHL Stormers set-up, both through his on-field talents and the mentorship role he will offer to those around him.

Stormers Rugby CEO Johan le Roux said that he is delighted to welcome Kolisi back.

“Siya is a national icon who has such a strong connection to our team and our supporters. He is also a family man who wants to be there for his children as much as possible.

“These are values that resonate with our club, and given the significance of our heritage in defining where we want to go, we are very happy to welcome Siya back to hopefully see out his career in the jersey he wore when it started.

Kolisi said that returning to Cape Town is a significant moment for him and his family.

“I have such incredible memories of my time at the DHL Stormers, the way I was embraced by the fans in my formative years has never left me.

“My family is in Cape Town and it is important to me to be close to them. This move gives me the chance to do that while also giving back to the team and fans who made such a big contribution to the player and person I am today.

“I am looking forward to contributing in any way I can to the future success and happiness of this special club and its incredible supporters,” he said.

Director of Rugby John Dobson said that Kolisi will add value to the squad in ways that no other player could.

“We have got an outstanding crop of loose forwards in our squad and a number of very strong young leaders, with the last three Junior Springbok captains all on our books.

“Siya will be able to help develop these players and mentor them in a way that nobody else could, given what he has achieved and what he represents to all South Africans and especially our fans.

“We are very aware of the load that he has carried professionally and personally over the last few years, but what is so encouraging is the way that he has bought into helping us reach the goals we have set for ourselves in developing our squad as we build towards Project 2029,” he said.
