“The Phil Spectrum” Live at the Baxter Theatre

Smile 90.4FM Breakfast producer, Phil de Lange, will present his debut one-man show “The Phil Spectrum” at the Baxter Theatre for one night only, on Friday 22 March at 19:30. The show is directed by acclaimed theatre maker Tara Notcutt, and forms part of the inaugural Mother City Comedy Festival.

Phil – a well-known and experienced radio producer and presenter on Smile 90.4FM – is making a big name for himself in comedy circles. Trevor Noah hand-picked him in 2018 to be part of the Nationwild comedy showcase broadcast on Showmax. His peers are also big fans of his work, choosing him as the recipient for the 2018 Savanna Comic’s Choice Award.

“The Phil Spectrum” is a blend of all his passions into a thought-provoking and unique musical comedy experience. He brings his career in the broadcasting industry to the stage with live radio sketches, mixed with catchy ukulele songs and – of course – hilarious stand-up.

Tickets for “The Phil Spectrum” are available for R120.00 at Webtickets.

Philippi boasts world-class sports ground

Children from the iTemba Labantu Centre in Philippi are overwhelmed after soccer legend Philipp Lahm, the former Germany and Bayern Munich captain,  opened a world class sports ground in the area.

It took 12 years to complete. Part of the struggle related to the fact that the land was a water detention pond, assisting in the drainage from the surrounding informal settlement.

Fortunately the architect, Luyanda Mpahlwa, designed it in such a way that the special heavy-duty astroturf could handle heavy rainfall, while the field is fringed by a drainage system to prevent flooding in the area during downpours.

The R14 million project funded by the German based NGO Philipp Lahm Foundation also offers state of the art equipment which the more than 400 kids can use on a daily basis.

The Director of the Centre Otto Kohlstock says Lahm attended in person to open the sports ground on Saturday which was a glorious occassion.

The Philippi-based community now boasts the sports facility, in addition to its existing soup kitchen, pre-school and youth training centre, helping to improve the lives of the poverty-stricken children in the area.
