WATCH: These videos show just how advanced AI has become, and the disruption it could unleash

AI

Over the past few months, the world has witnessed an extraordinary acceleration in AI, beyond huge developments in LLM’s like ChatGPT.

We are now seeing realistic digital avatars, near-perfect voice cloning, AI systems capable of producing high-quality films, and software that can manage complex workflows, technologies that are increasingly blurring the line between human creativity and machine creation.

Supporters argue this could spark a new creative renaissance, removing traditional barriers to making art, telling stories, and building ideas. But others argue we are approaching a moment where AI begins to challenge how society defines authorship, authenticity, and even purpose in human work.

Then there’s the growing concern over jobs. Some believe the AI job-loss wave has already begun. Researchers have even coined a term for the modern anxiety tied to this fear: “AI replacement dysfunction,” or AIRD, the stress of wondering whether your role could soon be automated.

The three videos below show just how far AI has already come. The future no longer feels distant. It’s already here.

The TV shows that deserve and don’t deserve a reboot

Long gone are the days when you couldn’t just watch your favourite show at any time. Before streaming we had to turn on the TV at a very specific time and day. It’s those shows that we’ll always remember fondly…but when thinking of a reboot – is it always a good idea?

5 classic shows that got a reboot

Dallas — Rebooted in 2012

One of the biggest TV dramas of the 1980s, Dallas returned in 2012 with a new generation of Ewings while bringing back much of the original cast. The reboot kept the oil-money power struggles and family betrayals that made the original famous.

The A-Team — Rebooted in 2010 (film)

Known for explosions, disguises, and the line “I love it when a plan comes together,” The A-Team got a modern big-screen reboot in 2010. The movie kept the wild action and team chemistry while upgrading the scale.

Knight Rider — Rebooted in 2008

The iconic crime-fighting duo of Michael Knight and his AI car KITT returned in 2008 with a new cast and upgraded tech. While the reboot modernised the look, fans still loved seeing that classic red scanner light again.

MacGyver — Rebooted in 2016

The ultimate “fix-it-with-anything” hero came back in 2016 with a younger, faster-paced reboot. The new version kept the core idea alive — solving impossible problems using brains instead of brute force.

Magnum, P.I. — Rebooted in 2018

The laid-back Hawaiian private investigator returned in 2018 with a fresh cast but the same tropical crime-solving energy. Fast cars, island scenery, and easy confidence stayed central to the reboot.

Police have confiscated over 500 licensed firearms this week

Police have confiscated over 500 licensed firearms this week, following compliance inspections at 3 728 business premises. These operations were carried out at premises such as gun dealers and security companies. Officers carried out the operations in terms of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.

The Act places strict obligations on licence holders to ensure safe storage, proper authorization, and accountability for all licensed firearms and ammunition. According to the Act, all gun owners must be in possession of both a competency certificate and a valid licence(s) or permit to possess a firearm as an individual or for business purposes.

Expired firearm licences

Lt Col Amanda van Wyk says the National Tracking and Tracing Task Team, operating under OPERATION BUYISA, arrested a 55-year-old gun dealer from Middelburg. He was taken into custody for failing to comply with the Firearms Control Act. She says 537 licensed firearms and ammunition were then seized. A preliminary report suggests the team followed up information they obtained on a security company allegedly operating in Middelburg with expired firearm licences.

Further investigation led the team to a plot on the outskirts of eMalahleni after interviewing a gun dealer who reportedly stored the security company’s firearms. The team found a large quantity of licensed firearms and ammunition stored at the plot. This was confirmed to be an unlicensed storage facility. The gun dealer had allegedly ran out of storage space at its registered business premises.

Important information for licensed gun owners and institutions

Licensed gun owners and institutions are reminded that in terms of Section 120(1) of the Firearms Control Act, it is an offence to:

  • – contravene or fail to comply with any provision of the Act;
  • – breach conditions of a licence, permit or authorization; or
  • – disregard any lawful notice or requirement issued under the Act.

World Spay Day: One Simple Procedure Could Save Thousands of Animals from Suffering

World Spay Day: One Simple Procedure Could Save Thousands of Animals from Suffering

One Simple Procedure Could Save Thousands of Animals from Suffering. In just 48 hours, a bold animal welfare mission is taking aim at one of South Africa’s most urgent and overlooked crises: runaway pet overpopulation. On 24 and 25 February, TEARS Animal Rescue is leading a high-impact World Spay Day campaign to sterilize 350+ cats and dogs. This will stop thousands of future animals from being born into neglect, hunger and overcrowded shelters.

“STERILIZING ANIMALS IS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL WAY TO REDUCE ANIMAL SUFFERING,” SAYS TEARS OPERATIONS MANAGER MANDY STORE.

The campaign, aptly titled “Stop the Cycle. Save Lives.”, brings together a powerful coalition including Animal Welfare South Africa, AfriPaw and veterinarians from TAH. Over two intense days, clinical facilities will be transformed into life-saving hubs, with teams working flat-out to reach under-served communities where access to veterinary care is limited or non-existent.

Why the urgency? Because one unsterilized animal can lead to hundreds, or even thousands, of unwanted animals over time. Many are born into hardship, with shelters already stretched beyond capacity. Sterilization doesn’t just rescue animals—it prevents suffering before it begins.

Store added, “WE SEE MOTHERS EXHAUSTED FROM CONSTANT BREEDING AND LITTERS BORN INTO NEGLECT. THIS IS NOT BECAUSE PEOPLE DON’T CARE, BUT BECAUSE PREVENTION DIDN’T HAPPEN IN TIME.

The goal for World Spay Day is 350 sterilizations

For this campaign, R500 covers far more than just surgery. Each animal receives sterilization, vaccination, a microchip and a bag of food, and is logged into a database that helps track progress area by area. The goal: 350 sterilizations, each one a powerful intervention against overcrowded shelters and unnecessary euthanasia.

SHE SAYS, “ONE STERILIZATION DOESN’T JUST HELP ONE ANIMAL; IT PREVENTS GENERATIONS OF SUFFERING.”

Help stop the cycle and save lives

TEARS works as a pro-life shelter, but even lifesaving organisations face hard limits. “When our shelter is full, we can’t take in more animals—even though the need is overwhelming,” Store explains. “That’s why prevention is everything.”

As World Spay Day approaches, the message is clear: one decision, one donation, one procedure can change everything—not just for a single animal, but for entire generations yet to be born.

Infant Among Three Killed in Athlone Shooting

police

Police have confirmed a triple murder in Athlone, after a shooting on Tuesday night at Sunbird Court, Bridgetown.

Three people, including a 9-month-old baby, were killed, and two men were injured.

Authorities say three suspects fled the scene, and the motive is still unknown.

Detectives from the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit are leading the investigation, and SAPS is urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stop or use the MySAPS app.

Provincial Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile has condemned the latest attack.

“The South African Police Service strongly condemns the senseless and brutal killing of three people, including an infant, in a shooting incident last night.”

Police responded to the scene at around 22:00, where officers found the bodies of two women aged 25 and 36, as well as the nine-month-old baby, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

Two adult males, who were also shot and injured, were transported to a medical facility for treatment.

Patekile says all available resources have been mobilised to trace and apprehend those responsible.

“SAPS unequivocally condemns violent crimes and we assure the residents of Athlone and the broader community that every effort will be made to bring the perpetrators to book and to restore safety and stability in the area.”

While the motive for these murders is still under investigation, it comes shortly after Police Minister Firoz Cachalia confirmed in Parliament yesterday that the SANDF will be deployed to gang-ridden hotspots on the Cape Flats within 10 days.

He told MP’s during the debate of the State of the Nation Address that discussions around the deployment have been held, and that troops would go in to support the police in stabilising crime-ridden provinces.

This includes several areas in the Western Cape where gangs are terrorising communities, and in Gauteng, to crack down on illegal mining.

Cachalia also announced that, at the request of President Cyril Ramaphosa, troops would also be deployed to the Eastern Cape, where violent crime is rampant.
