Golden Arrow Bus Services (GABS) has approached the courts on an urgent basis in a bid to stave off strike action by the National Union for All Sectors (NUFAS).

GABS says it is aware of a notice issued by NUFAS advising its members of an intention to embark on strike action from 00:00 on Thursday, 10 September 2026.

Golden Arrow is challenging the planned strike action and says it will communicate the outcome of the legal proceedings on Wednesday, 9 September.

Head of Corporate Affairs & Human Resources John Dammert has apologised to passengers for the uncertainty and potential disruption that this matter may cause.

“The company understands the important role its services play in the daily lives of thousands of people across Cape Town and does not take any potential disruption lightly. However, Golden Arrow cannot compromise on the safety of its passengers, drivers, employees or members of the public.”

Dammert says it first needs to ensure that its buses are operated safely and responsibly.

He says the issues raised by NUFAS relate, among other things, to the application of disciplinary processes.

“Golden Arrow does not accept the allegation that its procedures are applied unfairly. The company maintains that its policies are implemented in accordance with applicable labour legislation, collective agreements, established company procedures and the principles of procedural fairness.”

Dammert stresses that where an employee believes that disciplinary action has been unfairly applied, appropriate dispute-resolution mechanisms are available.

“Golden Arrow respects employees’ constitutional rights to participate in lawful and peaceful industrial action. At the same time, the company has a duty to protect its passengers, employees and the public and will take all reasonable steps to fulfil that responsibility.”
