Kraaifontein police are searching for a motorist after an alleged hit-and-run outside the Parkdene Primary School on Tuesday, which saw four learners sustain injuries.
According to police, the incident happened around 14:45 as learners were crossing the road, shortly after school was dismissed for the day.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond, says two of the learners, in Grade 3 and Grade 7, sustained minor injuries and were able to return home.
A Grade 2 learner remains in hospital with serious injuries, while another Grade 2 learner, who had also been hospitalised, has since been discharged.
“The WCED can confirm that four learners were injured following an alleged hit-and-run incident outside the school,” Hammond said.
“According to initial reports, the car was speeding when it hit the four learners while they were crossing the road. The car then sped away and crashed into a traffic light. Three people allegedly jumped out of the car and ran away.”
She says emergency services responded quickly to the scene.
“The school thanks the support of Titanium Emergency Services for their quick response time and support at the scene, as well as SAPS for their support. Two of the learners were transported to the hospital.”
Hammond adds that the Grade 2 learner who is still in the hospital has made steady progress towards recovery.
“Our thoughts are with him and his family, and with all the learners involved. Counselling support has been provided to the school.”
She says while they are deeply grateful that the incident didn’t result in the loss of life, they are very aware that a little boy still lies in a hospital bed.
“This is a careless and cowardly act, and we hope that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”
Kraaifontein police registered a case of reckless and negligent driving, and the driver is now being sought by police.
