Five family members are among 7 people killed in a shooting incident in Johannesburg. The shooting incident occurred in the Mokokotlong informal settlement in Orange Farm.

Police Brigadier Brenda Muridili says Orange Farms Police Officers went out to the scene of the shooting incident during the early hours of 13 October 2024. She says it was reported that one of the victims went to the local tavern to buy alcohol but it was already closed.

He was then apparently involved in an altercation with the tavern owner. Following the argument, he went back home.

Muridili says, “It’s alleged that the tavern owner followed him home where the family members were still celebrating after lobola negotiations.

The tavern owner entered the house and opened fire at the family members.”

It is being reported that the tavern owner allegedly shot and killed seven people including a 3-year-old boy. The other victims were 5 family members, a neighbour and a friend.

At the same time, 4 people survived. A 31-year-old and a 1-year-old boy were taken to hospital with injuries. A 24-year-old woman and a 4-year-old did not have injuries.

She added, “The suspect then drove back home in Evaton where he allegedly shot himself. He was rushed to hospital but he died on arrival.”

Five family members murdered

Members of the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit have registered 7 cases of murder, 3 of attempted murder and opened an inquest.
