Firefighters have worked through the night to prevent a mountain fire from spreading towards Gordon’s Bay, after the blaze crossed the City of Cape Town’s boundary.

The City’s Fire & Rescue Service dispatched an Incident Management Team on Friday afternoon to monitor the fire on the mountain slopes in the Overstrand Municipality, as it moved towards the Kogelbaai area.

City Fire & Rescue spokesperson Michael Abrahams says the fire was initially inaccessible to firefighting teams because of the difficult terrain.

“The fire was inaccessible for firefighting due to the terrain and firefighting teams monitored the situation,” Abrahams said.

A drone unit was deployed on Saturday to provide aerial intelligence and track the movement of the fire.

The blaze subsequently crossed into the City’s area, prompting the deployment of additional firefighting resources.

The road to Rooiels was also closed, while City firefighting teams worked overnight to prevent the flames from spreading towards Gordon’s Bay.

Abrahams says the service is continuing to monitor the fire and will respond as conditions change.

“At this stage no lives or property are in danger. No injuries have been reported,” he said.

Fire and Rescue teams remain on standby as the situation develops.
