An 81-year-old woman from Piketberg has died after an alleged assault by her 54-year-old son, prompting outrage in the community.

The incident occurred on Sunday, 19 January 2025, on a small farm holding. According to rural activist, Billy Claasen, the son initially reported that his mother was experiencing a “sugar attack” and took her to a local medical facility for treatment.

Claasen says doctors grew suspicious and informed the police. The woman, who had sustained severe injuries, was then transferred to Tygerberg Hospital, where she later died.

Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi confirmed that Piketberg police were called to the hospital and that the suspect fled the scene before being arrested on Monday, 20 January 2025. He says a case of murder is being investigated.

“The 54 year old man made a court appearance in the Piketberg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 21 January 2025 and was remanded in custody until his next appearance. The motive for this attack is believed to be domestic related.”

He is due to appear in court again next week.

Claasen further called for the community to stand against such crimes and to ensure the accused does not receive bail.

“Crime affects us all and we all must work together and join hands to fight crime. May the aunt rest in peace. My deepest and sincere condolences to her family and friends.”

In a separate case of violence against the elderly, police are still investigating the murder of 89-year-old Ellen Malan in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, in September last year. Malan’s body was found in her home with her hands tied. Action Society, which is overseeing the case, noted that Malan left behind eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
