Informal settlements have been affected in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village, Old Crossroads and Schaapkraal areas. The Mosselbank river also burst its banks, affecting residents in Philadelphia and Klipheuwel.
The Keyser river is a concern as it bursts its banks again, causing flooding at the Melomed Private Hospital in Tokai. The Johnson and Johnson factory in Tokai was also flooded earlier. The City‘s Roads and Infrastructure Management Services is assisting to divert water from surrounding properties.
Numerous uprooted trees have been reported. Recreation and Parks is attending to these incidents. Numerous roadways have been flooded across the city, and there is a long list of areas experiencing power outages.
Meanwhile, NGOs are assisting with humanitarian relief for residents of affected informal settlements, among them the Mother Soup Kitchen and Ashraful Aid International. The City is also providing milling and sand where feasible.

Affected informal settlements include Philippi, Delft, Strand, Gugulethu, Mfuleni, Masiphumelele and Khayelitsha. In Strand, Kay’s Caravan Park was evacuated, as well as St Paul’s Primary School in Faure.

A farm dam burst in Joostenberg Vlakte, which caused flooding of some surrounding properties. There has also been reports of a house wall that collapsed in Vredehoek.

The five-day forecast indicates that more rain is on the way over the weekend.

Earlier on Thursday, the City’s Fire & Rescue Services rescued three men from the Parow Canal. The swift water rescue happened at the corners of Jan Van Riebeeck and Cloete Streets where fast flowing water in the canal adjacent to the railway trapped the three men on a ledge in the canal.
