South African singer Danny K has confirmed the death of his wife, Lisa Koppel, following a three-year battle with colorectal cancer.

Reports of Lisa’s passing, at the age of 41, emerged over the weekend.

Danny K shared a detailed tribute to his wife on Instagram on Tuesday, revealing for the first time the extent of her illness and the family’s efforts to find treatment.

Lisa was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in November 2023.

Danny K said she faced the disease with “extraordinary strength and determination”, with the family pursuing treatment and medical options both in South Africa and abroad.

“Tragically, despite everything, we could not save her,” he wrote.

Lisa had chosen to keep her illness private, with Danny K saying her priority was protecting the couple’s three children and preserving their happiness and innocence.

He described his wife as gentle, humble and brave throughout her illness, and thanked the doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals who cared for her during her treatment.

Family shares her story to raise awareness

Danny K said the family had decided to speak publicly about Lisa’s diagnosis for one important reason –  to raise awareness about colorectal cancer.

He pointed to the fact that the disease is increasingly affecting younger people, saying routine screening is now recommended from the age of 45 for people at average risk.

He also urged people experiencing persistent symptoms to speak to a doctor and have them properly investigated.

Lisa had hoped to one day use her experience to help raise awareness about colorectal cancer and encourage early detection.

“She never got that opportunity. Our family will now carry that purpose forward in her name,” Danny K wrote.

‘I have lost the wife I worshipped’

The singer said Lisa’s death had left both the Koppel and Gundelfinger families devastated.

“I have lost the wife I worshipped, our three children have lost an extraordinary mother, and her family and friends have lost someone they deeply loved,” he wrote.

The family has asked for prayers, compassion and privacy as they mourn.

Danny K said Lisa’s illness would not define her legacy.

“She will be remembered for the way she lived and loved: with kindness, humility, courage and an unwavering devotion to the people who meant everything to her,” he wrote.

The family has encouraged people seeking information about colorectal cancer and screening to contact the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).
