Cape Town residents, especially those affected by the movement of heavy vehicles along Kloof Nek Road, have been encouraged to comment on the matter.
The City of Cape Town has shared a proposal aimed at curbing the rising number of crashes involving heavy vehicles along the steep road.

The plan includes the introduction of a compulsory heavy vehicle stop on the city-bound section of the route.
It also includes a designated lane, stretching for about 250 metres, aimed at making it compulsory for trucks and buses to stop approximately 150 metres downhill from the Tafelberg Road pedestrian crossing.

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, added that once stopped, drivers would be required to engage low gear and remain in it for the rest of the descent.
“For the current righthand lane to accommodate general traffic, while the lefthand lane will be reserved for heavy vehicles only, for a limited distance of approximately 250 m,” read the City’s statement.
The road has been the scene of several vehicle accidents, most recently involving a truck which collided with a minibus taxi on Firdale Avenue in April, leaving several people injured and the taxi driver in a serious condition. Last year, a tourist bus ploughed into a bus stop at Belle Ombre Road, and a cement truck struck multiple parked cars in a separate accident.
Residents and stakeholders have been encouraged to give their input during a public participation process, which opened on 15 September and runs until 16 October 2025.
“Our aim is to implement the most effective measures to improve safety along this busy access route between the CBD and the Atlantic Seaboard,” said Quintas.
