Cape Town’s libraries and recreation centres are ready to keep young learners busy and engaged with a wide range of fun and educational activities this winter school holiday.
The City’s annual winter holiday programme, coordinated by the City’s Community Services and Health Directorate, promises to deliver hundreds of activities across various community facilities, offering children a safe and stimulating environment during the cold season.
“Winter holidays are often seen as dull due to the chilly and wet weather, but our teams have ensured that learners will be kept entertained and active, mostly indoors,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.
City libraries are rolling out an imaginative line-up of events that combine learning with fun. Alongside perennial favourites like board games, chess tournaments, and arts and crafts, this year’s offerings include exciting new additions.
Young creatives can sketch anime characters under the guidance of local artists, explore basic coding by building simple games, or experiment in a pop-up mini science lab hosted by the Mobile Science Centre: interactive storytelling sessions and awareness talks round off the educational side of the programme.
Meanwhile, the City is offering activities aimed at keeping children physically active and socially engaged. These include sporting events, dance challenges, gaming tournaments, and more.
The activities are designed not only for entertainment, but also to teach valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving.
“These programmes provide safe, enriching environments where children can learn, connect, and have fun. It’s more than just a distraction from school – it’s an opportunity to grow,” added Councillor Higham.
Each facility has its own unique schedule, so families are encouraged to check with their local library or recreation centre to find out what activities are available in their area.
