Cape Town Port has received 9 new high-tech rubber-tyred gantries. This is already speeding up the loading and offloading of containers. Economic Development MEC Ivan Meyer says the upgrades are cutting waiting times for ships and trucks.

MEC Ivan Meyer said, ” The impact of this new infrastructure is already visible in the record number of containers being shipped and offloaded daily, as well as reduced vessel and truck turnaround times.”

It is also boosting trade and creating jobs. He says more equipment is on the way, which will further improve the port’s performance and strengthen the City’s role as a gateway for economic growth. He has described it as a milestone in maritime logistics, in the ongoing transformation of the Cape Town Container Terminal.

Dr Meyer added, “Progress with the assembly of the second batch of RTGs is well advanced, and the components of the third batch have already arrived.”

Gantries have anti-sway capabilities

Transnet Port Terminals officially handed over the first batch of nine state-of-the-art rubber-tyred gantries earlier this week. These advanced machines are equipped with anti-sway capabilities. MEC Meyer says they are already making a measurable impact on port operations.

Meyer elaborated, ” These interventions are essential to improving the competitiveness of our maritime logistics and enhancing the Port of Cape Town’s standing in global indices such as the World Bank Container Port Performance Index.”

A significant milestone

The Managing Executive for the Transnet Port Terminals in the Western Region, Oscar Borchards, added that this significant milestone is just one step forward in the terminal fleet development plan and that the refurbishment of ship-to-shore cranes will also commence shortly.
