Cableway operations have been temporarily halted

Cableway operations have been temporarily halted in the Mother City due to a fire in the parking garage at the lower cableway station yesterday. Management at the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company says structural engineers will arrive there today, to investigate the damage caused to the parking garage and the administration building.

Cableway operations have been temporarily halted

The Managing Director of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, Wahida Parker says the fire did not reach the machinery that operates the movement of the cable cars. She added that they were able to safely bring people down from the top of the mountain yesterday. It’s being reported that over 400 people had to be brought down in the cable cars.

Parker says they hope to have an indication by later today on when operations can resume at the world-famous tourist attraction.

For now, all operations of the cable cars have been temporarily suspended following the probe by the engineers. She previously noted that the commercial activities at the lower station (such as food and beverage) remain open to the public to visit, but it is not available until the necessary checks have been done.

Residents and visitors to Cape Town are advised to watch the website and social media channels of the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company, for the latest updates.
