Breaking news: The department of Basic Education has just announced that all contact sports at schools will immediately be discontinued.

The council of education ministers made the decision at a virtual meeting this morning.

The DBE says non-contact sports and exercise may still continue at schools, subject to Covid-19 health- and safety protocols, but no physical contact will be allowed between players.

The decision comes after there has been a gradual increase in infections among school learners.

The Department says the ruling will stay in place, until no further infections are reported at schools.
