South Africans got a great start to the week with DJ Black Coffee receiving his first Grammy Award! Born Nkosinathi Maphumulo, the internationally renowned producer was nominated for Best Dance / Electronic Album for his album ‘Subconsciously’, released in 2021.
The musician held his own against international names such as Major Lazer, Illenium, Sylvan Esso, Marshmello, and Ten City – snatching the gong at the 64th annual Grammys in Las Vegas. Notably, being the first South African producer to be nominated or win in this category.
“I want to thank God for the gift of music and being able to share it with the world and heal some souls and help people go through whatever they are going through in life. I want to thank everyone who is on the album, from Msaki in South Africa to David Guetta, who had believed in working with a smaller artist like myself, and trusting me and trusting my ear. Pharrell (Williams), Josie, Delilah, Una Rams, and everyone who is on the album.”
Accepting his award, accompanied by his eldest son Esona, in a matching cream suit, he thanked God, his family, and his team. “Thank you to my fans around the world for believing in me.”

In a post-interview, Black Coffee sent our words of wisdom and encouragement to the youth of Africa, saying that “African kids who are watching, who come from where I come from, who may think they don’t have a chance to get on a global stage like this, I wanted to just say to them it’s possible; the award is not just for me.”
