Beware the full moon spring tide!

Published on

Beware the full moon spring tide! That’s the request from the National Sea Rescue Institute. The NSRI has issued a safe alert about the tide. The Spring tide is expected to peak by this Saturday.

Beware the full moon spring tide

The organization has called on bathers, boaters, paddlers, sailors, shoreline anglers and coastal hikers to be cautious around the coastline.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon says the full moon Spring tide causes the daily 2 high tides to be higher than normal and the daily 2 low tides to be lower than normal.

Lambinon added, “Be aware of coastal hiking trails that can be cut off during high tide.”

People are asked to follow the SA Weather Service for their daily forecasts, as well as their daily tide timetables.

Hazardous conditions

He says rough seas, brought on by winter storms and cold fronts, could contribute to hazardous conditions around the coastline during this Spring tide phase.

“Spring tides pose a potential hazard to bathers around the coastline – especially during the outgoing tide,” Lambinon said.

To those inland water users, they’re cautioned to be safe while bathing, boating and paddling on rivers, lakes and dams.
