As South Africa maintains a cautious and measured response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there are growing calls for Pretoria to impose sanctions on Moscow.

The government yesterday said it has called on Russia to withdraw from Ukraine, but officials say South Africa will first promote dialogue before it considers sanctions. Ukrainian Ambassador to South Africa Liubov Abravitova called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to impose sanctions on Russia because the response to the invasion of Ukraine could determine the future world order.
