An inmate has been re-arrested shortly after launching an escape from a correctional facility in Caledon. Police-Sergeant Wesley Twigg says the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen (Adv) TE Patekile has thanked officers for their commitment in ensuring the re-arrest of the inmate.

“SAPS members went into the river and arrested the inmate who is serving a life sentence for rape.”

Twigg says following the escape, on Saturday morning, 08 November 2025, a well-coordinated search team was established. He says the search was hampered by difficult terrain and darkness. Members of the SAPS Drone Unit were called in to assist officers on the ground. Twigg says their extensive search efforts paid off when thermal imaging technology was used by the Drone Unit to locate the inmate and he was taken into custody.
