‘Eks bang’ Afrikaans Rapper Angie Oeh Fights Stage 4 Lung Cancer

Published on

In 2021, Angie Oeh’s breakout single Dis Joy Wyfie went viral on TikTok. This propelled the Afrikaans mumble rapper to became the new “It Girl” in the local music scene. But on 14 August 2023, the 24-year-old rising star took to Instagram to announce a cancer diagnosis. She confirms it is stage 4 lung cancer.

Oeh’s full name is Angelique Greeff.

“Vandag is ek gediagnosed, met stage 4 long kanker, eks bang,” she wrote. It translates to: today, I have been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, I am scared.

In a heartfelt post, Oeh reaches out to her fans, describing how scared she is. She pleads for help in her post. A far cry from her usual alternative punk rock persona and provocative lyrics.

Along with a series of photos of her current condition in hospital, Oeh explained that she needs a life-altering surgery – urgently. Along with six months of chemotherapy.

This is not the artist’s first tussle with cancer. She previously had a 15 centimeter cancerous tumour removed from her back. This was the surgery that pushed her to give her music career a go.

Now, she’s fighting for her life.

Her management team has created a Backabuddy campaign to help raise R250,000 to cover Oeh’s medical expenses for the long journey ahead. Within minutes of going public, the campaign had already crossed the R10,000 mark.
