Activists who have long fought the redevelopment of the River Club in Observatory are celebrating a court ruling halting development.

Published on

The Western Cape High court on Friday stopped the R4.5 billion development, ruling that the developers must “consult meaningfully” with all affected people. Yesterday, as the country marked Human Rights Day, the Observatory Civic Association, the Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council and the Liesbeek Action Campaign, celebrated the court interdict and a cleansing ceremony was held at the club. Meanwhile, the developers, the Liesbeek Leisure Properties Trust, have vowed to challenge the court ruling.
