Action Society has formally written to the Bellville Magistrates’ Court, opposing any relaxation of bail for 37-year-old Sameemah Jacobs, who is accused of abducting baby Mogamat Imaad Sharmar in June.

Jacobs, currently out on R4 000 bail, has repeatedly requested amendments to her conditions, first citing a “religious excursion” and later seeking to visit her son and collect belongings in Mitchells Plain, the area where the baby was found.

Kaylynn Palm of Action Society confirmed their stance against any bail changes, saying the accused has previously displayed deceptive conduct and cannot be trusted under relaxed supervision.

“Her changing explanations appear manipulative rather than genuine. Allowing access to Mitchells Plain, where baby Mogamat was found, creates unnecessary risk. Relaxing the bail would undermine public confidence in the justice process and re-traumatise the victim’s family.”

Baby Mogamat’s mother, Imaan Sharmar, said the accused befriended her under two different names, first as Washeemah, a woman she met at a clinic before her baby’s birth, and later as Chevon, a supposed nurse from the “Zoey Project” who claimed to assist young mothers. On 28 June 2025, during what Imaan believed was a legitimate support programme outing, her baby was abducted. The child was recovered two days later in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, after swift police action.

Palm added that Jacobs had carefully planned the abduction, using multiple identities and manipulating community trust networks to target a vulnerable mother and her newborn.

“The court must ensure that bail conditions reflect the seriousness of this crime and the risk posed by the accused. We urge the court to keep victim-impact considerations central in all decisions.”

Action Society says a bail-amendment hearing will be held on 6 November 2025.
