Acting Health Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi says despite a downward trend in Covid-19 numbers, the health department remains concerned about rising cases in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

In the last 24 hours, the Western Cape recorded the majority of cases, overtaking Gauteng. At the same time, the department is currently vaccinating around 1 million people every 4 days. The number of vaccines administered has surpassed 7 million, despite a vaccine supply constraint preventing the department from reaching its 300 000 daily target.

Meanwhile, the Department’s Deputy Director-General, Dr Nicholas Crisp says the “most vulnerable” are not being reached sufficiently. In the next month, every 1 in 7 vaccines will need to be administered to someone older than 60. He says the older population, specifically those over 60 and 50, must not be forgotten. Some good news is that after a week of vaccine supply constraints, the department expects to take delivery of over 7 million Pfizer vaccine doses next week.
