Zolani Mahola of Freshlyground fame is set to enlighten, entertain and incite audiences in her one woman show, “The One Who Sings” ( from the Xhosa “Lo Uculayo”) at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town from 20 – 24th of November 2019.

Through the age-old tradition of oral storytelling and through original music Zolani takes the audience on a journey into a particular experience through the eyes of a girl growing up in a township in the Eastern Cape in 1980’s Apartheid South Africa. This girl blossoms into a young woman whose story shifts from disempowerment to empowerment just as the country changes its story from one of exclusion to inclusion. Zolani details her experience as a young adolescent in the early 1990’s, opening up for the first time about her struggles and impressions of life growing up in a new South Africa which is itself grappling with its own identity.

A University of Cape Town trained actress, Zolani expertly and deftly portrays her story with this unique offering. She shares the highs and lows of her life against the backdrop of the greater South African story from the last years of Apartheid, through to the time of the Rainbow Nation and into our challenging present. The show explores themes of identity, overcoming challenges and understanding their meaning in our lives. It champions the value of one’s own personal story in the face of the story of a community and that of a nation.

It is a challenging show but in the end an uplifting one and Mahola, who has gone on to travel the world, singing with legends like Stevie Wonder, BB King, Oliver Mtukudzi, Miriam Makeba, Shakira, Vusi Mahlasela, sharing stages with Robbie Williams, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Clegg, Busi Mhlongo and Annie Lennox; tells her story in an unassuming, raw and engaging way that leaves audiences feeling moved and inspired.

Show times are as follows:

  • Wednesday, 20 November at 20h30
  • Thursday, 21 November at 20h30
  • Friday, 22 November at 20h30
  • Saturday, 23 November at 15h00 and 20h30

Tickets are already on sale at Webtickets for R130 each.

The show is directed by Faniswa Yisa, with Angela Nemov as designer and Aron Turest-Swartz, musical director.
