The Honest Truth: The Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winner, Toni Morrison, was a beacon in African-American culture.

Published on

Author and lecturer, Meg Vandermerwe, paid tribute to her mentor, Toni Morrison, on The Honest Truth Wednesday 7 August.

Toni Morrison, the Nobel laureate in literature whose best-selling work explored black identity in America — and in particular the often crushing experience of black women — through luminous, incantatory prose resembling that of no other writer in English, died on Monday in the Bronx. She was 88.

Meg studied English at Oxford University and holds Masters degrees from the universities of Sussex and East Anglia. She teaches English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of the Western Cape, and lives in Cape Town, South Africa.
