The Cape of Good Hope SPCA says it has seen a sharp increase in calls following Guy Fawkes celebrations on Thursday, 5 November 2026, with its Inspectorate receiving 81 calls this year, compared to 51 last year.
The organisation spokesperson Belinda Abraham says it had a busy night responding to Guy Fawkes-related incidents, with inspectors working through the night to assist animals in distress.
“We were hoping for the best last night following two fairly quiet Guy Fawkes celebrations over the last two years. We had 8 inspectors on duty, logging a total 81 calls, an almost 60% increase compared to last year.”
Among the incidents was the death of Max, a dog from Delft who died after panicking at the sound of fireworks and becoming impaled on a security gate at his home.
Abraham says Max was inside the house when fireworks went off just after dark last night. His family had locked the security gate in an attempt to keep him safe. However, in his panic, he tried to squeeze between the bars and was impaled.

An SPCA collection officer rushed Max to a private veterinary practice for emergency treatment, accompanied by the City’s Law Enforcement Animal Control Auxiliary Unit.
“A scan revealed severe injuries to his intestines and bladder, and despite efforts to save him, Max had to be humanely euthanised.”
He was among at least five animals that required urgent veterinary care during the SPCA’s Guy Fawkes response.
Abraham says the incident is heartbreaking, particularly as Max’s family had taken steps to protect him.
“Max should still be alive today. Our thoughts are with his family. Every bang carries into the homes around you. Please think of the animals inside and celebrate without fireworks.”
The SPCA is urging residents to remain alert and look out for animals that may still be frightened, injured or displaced following Guy Fawkes.
The organisation is also reminding pet owners that fireworks can cause animals to panic and injure themselves while trying to escape the noise.
Residents who come across animals in distress can contact the SPCA Inspectorate on 021 700 4158 or 021 700 4159. After-hours emergencies can be reported on 083 326 1604.
