The Western Cape Public Order Police, the Anti-Gang Unit, Metro Police, and Law Enforcement were deployed to the Steenberg area following complaints of public violence allegedly linked to Guy Fawkes activities.

Steenberg Police reportedly received complaints of public violence at the corner of St Christopher and Military Road on Thursday morning.

According to police, upon their arrival, officers found young boys who were throwing stones at each other, affecting road users and causing damage to property.

Lieutenant Colonel F.C Van Wyk says that crime operations in the Steenberg area were heightened with high-density policing and three males aged between 19 and 21 were arrested for public violence. They are due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court soon.

According to Van Wyk, the motive for these stone-throwing incidents is under investigation.

“Western Cape SAPS will not be turning a blind eye to lawlessness, and offenders can expect an unpleasant encounter with the law.”

At the same time, the Steenberg SAPS Station Commander have confirmed that they are waiting for seven boys aged between 13 and 17, who were found inciting and being part of this public violence. Van Wyk says these boys are not under arrest.

“This deployment will remain on the ground to bring to and end any acts of violence that may threaten the safety of the public. Police will not tolerate any acts of criminality and in the event of crime taking place, our members will not hesitate to take decisive action.”

Meanwhile, the City’s Law Enforcement spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, says the City has received sporadic reports of anti-social behaviour linked to Guy Fawkes in Lavender Hill, Lotus River and Elsies River.

Dyason says reports include stoning of vehicles and attacks on passers-by with paint and other substances. The Public Emergency Communication Centre has also received a few calls about the illegal discharge of fireworks.

“Our enforcement agencies are increasing deployment, particularly in the pockets of the city where incidents have surfaced in the past. We appeal to the public to please refrain from these behaviours as it can result in serious injury and also criminal charges,” added Dyason

The City has reminded the public that the discharge of fireworks is illegal unless a permit has been obtained to host a fireworks display.

Members of the public can report incidents to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre by dialling 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or via the Safety and Security reporting feature on the City app.
