The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is issuing a stern warning to matric learners after recording 12 examination irregularities during the November 2026 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.
According to the department, six candidates were found in possession of unauthorised electronic devices, including cellphones, while another six were caught with crib notes.
Minister Jaco Londt warns that learners caught with cellphones, smart devices or unauthorised notes in examination rooms could face serious consequences, including being barred from writing the NSC examinations for up to three examination periods.
“Do not be foolish and put your matric results at risk by attempting to cheat. Every candidate has signed an examination agreement and is aware of the rules. Being found with a cellphone, smart device or crib notes in an examination room can have severe consequences, including being barred from writing the NSC examinations for up to three examinations.”
He is urging learners to think carefully before making decisions that could undo years of hard work, reminding them that cheating is simply not worth the risk.
“After years of hard work, it is simply not worth taking that risk. Leave your cellphone and any unauthorised material outside the examination room and focus on doing your very best.”
Meanwhile, the examinations have reached the halfway mark, with learners having completed 14 examination days, 28 examination sessions and 95 of the 190 question papers scheduled for this period.
With just three weeks of exams remaining, learners are being urged to stay focused, look after themselves and give these final weeks their best effort.
