Police divers are continuing ongoing search efforts for an 18-year-old teen from Mfuleni, after he went missing in the surf at Glen Beach, Camps Bay, over the weekend.

NSRI Bakoven and NSRI Table Bay duty crews were activated following reports of a drowning in progress on Saturday evening, at around 18h57.

NSRI rescue swimmers, CoCT lifeguards, CoCT Law Enforcement, WC Government Health EMS rescue squad, Metro Police, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service and the SA Police Service responded directly to the scene while the NSRI rescue craft Gemini Legend was launched.

A Metro Police drone unit, nearby at the time, launched an aerial drone, assisting in the search.

The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon says the teenager was swimming with friends at Glen Beach when he got into difficulties and was being swept towards Maidens Cove.

A friend had tried to rescue the teenager but, in strong currents, was unable to reach him when he disappeared.

Despite an extensive air, sea and shoreline search, there have been no signs of the teenager. Police have opened an inquest investigation.
