Learners, parents and communities across the Western Cape are encouraged to honour the teachers who have made a difference in their lives.

This is in commemoration of World Teachers’ Day, under the theme “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures”.

The Provincial Education MEC Jaco Londt is using 5 October to highlight the vital contribution of educators and encourage communities to recognise their efforts, both inside and outside the classroom.

“We know that much of what teachers do happens beyond the classroom, long after the school bell has rung. They show up for our learners everyday, giving their times, energy and commitment because they care,” said Londt.

October is also Teacher Appreciation Month, with the provincial education department calling on learners, parents, former learners and communities to thank teachers who make a difference in the lives of children every day.

Among those being recognised are Mthobi Fihla, Danielle Bosch and Hortense Stegmann, three Western Cape teachers who recently received top honours at the National Teaching Awards. The department said their achievements are highlighted as examples of the impact teachers can have.

Londt said that despite the challenges teachers face on a daily basis, they continue to serve their learners and communities. As such, he thanked teachers across the province for their care, dedication and sacrifices.

“Their work leaves a lasting impact on learners and communities across the Western Cape. They not only teach, but they lead, innovate and change lives. And they do so quietly and consistently despite immense daily challenges,” added Londt.
