The Western Cape SAPS has confirmed that the fourth victim, in a drive-by shooting in Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain, late Wednesday night, has succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
Police say four armed suspects were reportedly driving around the area in a white Nissan Almera, with tinted windows, when they opened fire on the victims before fleeing the scene.
Police responded to reports of a shooting in Blombos Street at around 23:15, and they discovered the bodies of two men with fatal gunshot wounds.
Shortly thereafter, police found another man’s body on Eisleben Road.
“A third man, who had also sustained gunshot wounds, was found in Eisleben Road after apparently fleeing from the shooters,” said Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Andre Traut, in a statement.
At the time of the shooting, the female victim was rushed to hospital having sustained serious gunshot wounds. The SAPS confirmed her death on Thursday morning.
“Kindly be advised that the fourth victim (female) succumbed in hospital due to the injuries sustained.”
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Andre Traut, said detectives are not certain of the motive yet, but suspect it could be gang-related, with the Anti-Gang Unit investigating the case.
“Police are also following up on information regarding a possible gang-related motive. [The Anti-Gang Unit] are following up on all available information and are also canvassing the area for possible CCTV footage and witnesses who may assist in identifying the suspects,” said Traut.
Abie Isaacs of the Cape Flats Safety Forum confirmed the presence of the Anti-Gang Unit in the area, but he said concerns remain for the safety of the community.
“We call on the authorities to speed up the investigation, activate the 72 hours, so that the alleged perpetrators can be brought to book… We acknowledge that the Anti-Gang Unit is in the area and has been in the area, however we firmly hold the view that more must be done in terms of getting the alleged suspects arrested,” said Isaacs.
Similarly, the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi, has called on investigators to swiftly identify and apprehend those responsible.
