Two City traffic officers sustained injuries during an illegal street racing operation in Paarden Eiland on Friday night, 18 September.

Officers initially attended to the illegal street race just after 11 pm and arrested two motorists for reckless and negligent driving.

At midnight, the racing started again, and officers returned, arresting a third driver for participating in illegal street racing, drunken driving, failing to stop and malicious damage to property after colliding with a traffic vehicle.

When Officers tried to impound the vehicle, the crowd of spectators became hostile and damaged two more traffic vehicles – one vehicle had its side and rear windows smashed.

Maitland SAPS were called out for assistance and set off in pursuit of the vehicle, which had since been towed away from the scene.

A fourth driver, who was behind the wheel of the towed car, was arrested for riotous behaviour, intimidation, threatening a Peace Officer, hindering and obstructing a Peace Officer and inciting violence.

All four suspects were detained at the Maitland Police Station, and the three vehicles were impounded.

The MMC for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says he is deeply disturbed by the attack on Traffic Services during the operation.

“The behaviour of those involved in this fracas is yet another example of the lawlessness that exists on our roads and in our society. There can be no justification for breaking the law and then attacking the very people who are employed to serve and protect by enforcing those laws. I condemn the actions of these illegal street racers and those who support their actions in the strongest terms.”

The City is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of any of the criminals who attacked City enforcement staff.
