Traffic on the N2 outbound came to a standstill for hours on Tuesday morning, 25 August, after a 27-year-old taxi driver was chased onto the highway and shot in the head by two unknown suspects.

According to Constable Ndakhe Gwala, the taxi driver ran from Kanana informal settlement in Gugulethu, leaving his vehicle behind, to escape the two gunmen.

He somehow ended up running across the N2 highway near Borchards Quarry, where he was shot, collapsing on the roadway.

Gugulethu police registered a case of murder at about 10:58.

Gwala has confirmed that the motive for the attack is believed to be taxi violence-related.

She says that while there are several leads being followed up, no arrests have been made yet.
