There is some good news for those with petrol-powered vehicles, while the news is not so rosy for diesel motorists.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources officially released the fuel price adjustments for August 2026 on Monday morning.
Both grades of petrol will decrease by 52 cents per litre from Wednesday 5 August, while diesel will increase by between R1.23 and R1.38 per litre.
Illuminating paraffin will increase by just over R2 per litre, while LP gas will decrease by a substantial R5 in the Western Cape.
Price adjustments in full:
- Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): Fifty-two cents per litre (52.00 c/l) decrease.
- Petrol 95 (ULP &LRP): Fifty-two cents per litre (52.00 c/l) decrease.
- Diesel (0.05% sulphur): One hundred and thirty-eight point four-four cents per litre (138.44 c/l) increase.

- Maximum Retail Price of LPGas: Four hundred and forty-one cents per kilogram (441.00 c/kg) decrease and five hundred and three cents per kilogram (503.00 c/kg) decrease in the Western Cape.
Among the reasons for the adjustments:
- The average price for Brent Crude Oil decreased over the period under review
- Prices of diesel and paraffin, however, increased due to supply shortages caused by the escalation in the Russia/Ukraine conflict, which resulted in export restrictions by Russia
- The rand weakened slightly against the US dollar during the same period
- The prices of propane and butane decreased during the period under review
- The slate levy of 61.38 c/l will be implemented in the price structures of petrol and diesel.
