Rugby, fashion and gaming events are set to hit the Mother City this weekend, so expect a festive atmosphere. For rugby lovers, there’s the return of the Currie Cup tournament. The DHL Stormers XXIII will host defending champions Griquas at DHL Stadium on Friday, 17 July.
Currie Cup rugby returns to the Mother City
The stadium gates will open at 17:30, with kick-off expected at 19:05. You can get your tickets online or from the ticket office on Fritz Sonnenberg Road on match day. The City has advised residents and motorists that roads around the stadium, including Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Vlei Road and Granger Bay Boulevard, may be impacted on matchday.
Khayelitsha Fashion Week
On the fashion front, there’s the return of Khayelitsha Fashion Week for the hosting of its 11th anniversary edition. It once again serves as a platform celebrating local creativity, sustainable fashion, and emerging talent. Fashionistas will head to the Artscape Theatre Centre on Saturday, 18 July, where 45 aspiring models will take to the runway as part of the Mother City Fashion Experience to showcase various collections.
“Ahead of the event, designers participated in skills-development workshops, while the models completed runway and professional development training. This year’s competition places a strong focus on upcycling, challenging designers to transform recycled and waste materials into striking fashion pieces. The show starts at 13:00 and runs until 18:00.”
Rugby, fashion and gaming to hit the City this weekend
If you are in the northern suburbs, GrandWest in Goodwood will see lots of gaming action. This is because the second edition of the African Gaming Championship will be hosted there from 16 to 19 July. According to the City, the esports showcase will see Africa’s top players battle across some of the world’s biggest gaming titles for a share of the R150 000 prize pool. The organisers say the event also features the Nitro ASL Finals. This is where leading school teams in the country will compete for championship honours and qualification pathways to the Carry1st Africa Cup and the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship.
“More than just a tournament, the African Gaming Championship celebrates gaming culture with free spectator entry. The competition takes place daily from 09:00 to 17:00.”
A busy week of events ahead
But there’s more. For those who love running, you can look forward to the Cape Town Festival of Running. This encompasses 2 days of racing, celebrating fitness, teamwork, and healthy living. According to City event planners, the 26th edition will be held on Saturday with a 50 km ultra-marathon through Green Point, Mouille Point and Sea Point. This will take place alongside a 5 x 5 km team relay on the Sea Point Promenade. For Sunday, you can expect a half marathon, with more than 1,000 runners expected to tackle one of Cape Town’s most scenic routes through Sea Point, Bantry Bay and Camps Bay.
The events on both days will start at 7 am.
Again, people in the area are reminded that temporary traffic disruptions can be expected along sections of the route in Green Point, Sea Point and Camps Bay.
