The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate has commenced with the upgrade of a high-priority intersection in the Southern Suburbs to alleviate traffic congestion.
The De Waal Road, Kendal Road (M38) and Main Road (M4) junction will be widened, with roadworks at this intersection expected to continue until August 2027.
Work is planned to take place Monday to Thursday between 07:30 and 17:30, Friday between 07:30 and 14:30 and on Saturday between 07:30 and 14:00.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas, says the objective is to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow at this junction, which provides key road links for public transport, freight and emergency networks as well as residential, commercial and industrial areas, including Diep River and Southfield.
“The upgrade will also help accommodate the steep increase in traffic to the Southern Suburbs for schools and work. This congestion relief project is a perfect example of our efforts to keep Cape Town moving.”
De Waal and Kendal Roads currently function as single-carriageway roads, linking the M3, Main Road (M4), and Prince George Drive (M5).
The long-term plan involves extending these roads to connect with the R300.
This specific upgrade project includes:
- Widening the Kendal Road approach from two to three lanes, including two through-lanes merging into one downstream and the introduction of a new bus lane
- Widening the Main Road approaches (northern and southern approaches) from two to three lanes, including two through-lanes merging into one downstream lane
- Expanding De Waal Road to four lanes with two through lanes, one dedicated left-turn lane and one dedicated right-turn lane.
- Constructing medians on both the De Waal Road and Kendal Road approaches
- Reconstructing the existing footways along all four approaches based on the widened road sections
- Installing street lighting, stormwater connections and catch-pits
