A robber has been sentenced to 10 years in prison following his arrest in September for a series of incidents targeting runners and visitors on Signal Hill, marking a major breakthrough in efforts to curb criminal activity in the popular Table Mountain National Park area.
According to the South African National Parks (SANParks), the suspect was detained on 14 September 2025 after rangers on routine patrol noticed a man matching the description circulated in connection with several recent robberies.
Later that same day, a visitor was attacked and provided a positive identification, significantly strengthening the case against him. Rangers also found the suspect carrying a dangerous weapon within the park, leading to his immediate arrest.
In response to a spike in incidents earlier in the year, SANParks spokesperson Lauren Howard Clayton says Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) intensified patrols and increased its visibility on Signal Hill.
“In response to the spike in incidents in the first few months of 2025, TMNP deployed targeted patrols across Signal Hill, maintaining an active and highly visible presence”
A coordinated investigation between SAPS detectives and TMNP officials followed, with teams carefully compiling statements, ranger observations and other evidence linking the suspect to multiple robberies in the area.
Clayton says this collaboration proved crucial during court proceedings, ultimately leading to a direct 10-year prison sentence.
SANParks also reported a downward trend in cases reported on Signal Hill in recent months, suggesting the added enforcement presence is helping to restore a sense of safety for visitors and outdoor enthusiasts.
