A 42-year-old man is expected to appear in the Thembalethu Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 7 August 2026, on a charge of dealing in drugs after police allegedly uncovered mandrax tablets worth an estimated R1.3 million during a raid at his Lawaaikamp home in George on Wednesday.

According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies, officers seized 26,000 mandrax tablets during the intelligence-driven operation.

“The Conville Crime Prevention Unit, in collaboration with the Outeniqua K9 Unit, operationalised information received and executed a search warrant at a residence in Potsolo Notyeke Crescent, Lawaaikamp, George. During the raid, members found a box bearing the logo of a courier company containing packets of mandrax tablets. Officers also noticed a broken chest freezer on the property. A search of the freezer led to the discovery of plastic bags filled with mandrax tablets.”

Spies said preliminary investigations suggest the drugs were intended for distribution in and around the area.

The case is now being investigated by the Western Cape Provincial Organised Crime Unit.
