The community of Mitchells Plain is grieving and calling for justice after a man was killed in a horrific car crash on Eisleben Road in Lentegeur on Wednesday, a tragedy residents say they will not soon forget.
Disturbing videos circulating on social media show the aftermath of the collision, in which a BMW ploughed into several vehicles before fatally striking a pedestrian at high speed.
The impact was so severe that the victim’s body smashed through the BMW’s windscreen, with his legs severed and flung metres away. The driver of the BMW remains in hospital with serious injuries.
Police have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving has been opened, and the driver is expected to be arrested.
Lentegeur CPF spokesperson Byron De Villiers says residents are traumatised by the violent manner in which the victim lost his life.
“We share our deepest condolences with the family and friends for the horrific way in which he died. We hope the law will prevail and that the driver will be held accountable. Justice must be done. We also want to remind our community that speeding is deadly. It destroys lives.”
Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
“According to reports, the driver of a BMW drove on the wrong side of the road and collided with a pedestrian. The pedestrian was declared dead on the scene. The BMW then crashed into four other vehicles, injuring the drivers and their passengers including children. All injured victims, as well as the BMW driver, were taken to hospital for treatment.”
As residents revisit the scene in disbelief, the community’s message is clear: a life has been lost, families are shattered, and accountability is non-negotiable.
